What’s the Forfeit Policy?

We want teams on the field and games to be played. Sometimes plans change, but forfeits have a real impact on the rest of the league. Your opponent has set aside time to play, and staff, venues, and schedules have already been planned around the game.

If you think your team may be short, start early and explore your options before forfeiting.

Before You Forfeit

Short on players? You may still be able to play by opening Drop-In spots, inviting a friend, using an eligible substitute, or playing short.

See What’s Your Substitution Policy? for your options before calling it a forfeit.

If Your Team Still Cannot Play

A team representative, preferably the captain, should notify your local Volo team as soon as you know and at least 24 hours before the game whenever possible.

Playing over the weekend? Please let your local Volo team know by Friday morning whenever possible so there is enough time to communicate the change before game day.

Something unexpected come up later? Still let us know as soon as you can.

Providing notice does not change the forfeit result, but it gives everyone affected more time to plan.

Ready to notify us? See How Do I Report a Forfeit?

Are Forfeited Games Rescheduled?

No. Forfeited games are not rescheduled.

League schedules depend on venues, staffing, other teams, weather, and the length of the season, so teams should plan to play their originally scheduled games.

A forfeit also does not create eligibility for a refund or credit. See What’s the Refund Policy? for more information.

What If My Opponent Forfeits?

We know it’s frustrating to be ready to play and find out your opponent cannot make the game.

While we cannot control whether another team shows up, we ask all teams to communicate early and use the available options to avoid forfeiting whenever possible.

If we receive notice, we’ll communicate the change as quickly as we can. A replacement opponent or additional game cannot be guaranteed.

How Do Forfeits Affect Standings and Playoffs?

Every forfeit matters.

A forfeit may affect your team’s record, points, playoff seeding, or ability to qualify for playoffs depending on your league format.

Teams with two or more forfeits may also be removed from the league without a refund or credit.

League and playoff formats can vary, so check your league page for any additional program-specific requirements.

Who Can Participate?

Everyone who plays must be properly registered or rostered. Most Volo adult leagues also require participants to be at least 21 years old, so check your league page for any program-specific age requirements.

Want to bring a friend? Captains can open a Drop-In spot and share the registration link so they can register, complete their waiver, and claim the spot.

Friends cannot simply take a roster spot or play without registering. Using an unregistered or otherwise ineligible player may result in a forfeit for that team.

See What’s Your Substitution Policy? for full details on Drop-Ins, substitutes, and inviting friends.
